What Are Dental Implants?

With dental implants, you are able to replace missing teeth from root to crown in a way that looks, feels, and functions just like your natural teeth. The appliance does this by the utilization of three components: the titanium post, the abutment, and the custom-made crown. For the artificial tooth to be stable and secure, a titanium post is implanted into the jawbone. Throughout the healing process, the jawbone and post are fused together, creating a bond that is as strong as a natural tooth root. As a connector between the crown and implant, an abutment secures the post to the crown. Together, all the pieces make up a functional tooth replacement.

The Implant Process

Implant placement may differ from person to person. Just as everyone has a unique smile, their smiles also require unique care. This may be based upon factors such as medical history, smile goals, existing conditions, or the interests of the particular patient. In most cases, our implant process in Winterville, NC proceeds as follows:

During your free consultation, we invite you to ask questions or express any concerns you may have regarding your implant procedure. This appointment will also give our doctors an opportunity to evaluate your oral health using our cone beam CT scanner. This scanner will produce a 3-dimensional image of your dental anatomy. We will use this to assess the condition of your oral health, plan the precise location for the implant, and determine if preliminary treatment is necessary.

If we determine that you need preliminary treatment, we will ensure you are scheduled for the proper care prior to placing your implant. This is to facilitate the success of the surgery and the long-term stability of your implant. We will check for gum disease, loss of bone density, or the need to extract any of your teeth.

Once your oral health has been deemed suitable for placement surgery, we will schedule you for the procedure. During the surgery, we will create a small opening in the gum tissue where the implant will be placed. The implant post will then be embedded within the jawbone and left to heal between three to six months.

Once the implant has had sufficient time to heal, we will place an abutment on the implant. This component will serve as a stable foundation for your new dental crown. Using our CEREC system, we can create your new crown in one day, with advanced accuracy and precision. Once the crown has been placed, you will leave the office with your brand new smile.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants are far healthier and more dependable than other restorative treatments. Because they are able to replace the root of the natural tooth, they help to strengthen the jawbone through continual stimulation. The root replacement also makes the restoration more secure without the risk of falling out. Implants were designed to promote health and convenience for the wearers, as well as ease in maintenance. In order for patients to care for implants and ensure a lifetime of use, simply brush and floss them as if they were natural teeth!
