Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative administered through a breathable gas that is worn over your nose. Inhaling this gas produces a calm, relaxed feeling almost immediately while allowing you to stay awake and respond to questions or follow instructions.

This is a great option if you’re looking for a quick-acting sedative that lets you safely drive home after your procedure. Once the breathing mask is removed, you should be able to resume normal activities right away. With oral sedation, your dentist will prescribe a pill to be taken about an hour before your appointment. This allows time for the medication to take full effect before your procedure begins. Under oral sedation, you may feel drowsy but will be incredibly relaxed.
